Aroids for Dummies: The “Easy-Green” Guide
Aroids are a family of plants that generally love to climb or crawl. While they look exotic, their needs are actually quite simple once you understand their “Home Comforts”.
- Light: The “Sunglasses” Rule
Most Aroids live under the canopy of big trees. They want light, but they don’t want sunburn.
* The Rule: If you can’t read a book comfortably in the spot, its too dark.
*The Danger: If the sun is hitting the leaves directly and it feels hot on your skin, the leaves will scorch. Use a sheer curtain to “filter” the light. - Water” The “Knuckle” Test
Overwatering is the #1 plant killer. Most Aroids hate “wet feet” (roots sitting in water)
*The Test: Stick your finger into the soil up to the second knuckle.
*The Action: If the soil feels dry and doesn’t stick to your finger, it’s time to water. If it’s damp, wait two more days. - Soil: Think “Chunky,” Not “Dirt”
In the wild, these plants grow in decaying leaves and bark, not heavy garden soil.
*The Mix: You want a “Chunky Mix”. Think of it like a trail mix for plants.
*The Ingredients: Use a mix of potting soil, orchid bark, and perlite. This lets the roots breathe! - Humidity: The Tropical Secret
UK homes can be very dry, especially in winter.
*The Hack: Group your plants together (they create their own little micro-climate). Humidifiers help considerably.
*Avoid: Putting your plants directly next to a radiator. It’s like putting them in an oven.
| Plant Type | Difficulty | Best Features |
| Pothos | 1/10 | Virtually unkillable; grows long vines |
| Monstera | 3/10 | Iconic “Swiss Cheese” holes; grows very fast. |
| Alocasia | 6/10 | Stunning “Alien” leaves; a bit more dramatic about water. |
“Is My Plant Sad?” (Troubleshooting)
*Yellow Leaves: Usually means you are being “too nice” with the watering can. Let it dry out!
* Brown, Crispy Edges: Your plant is thirsty for humidity. Try a humidifier.
* Drooping: Check the soil. If it’s bone dry, it’s thirsty. If it’s soaking wet, the roots might be struggling.

Why trust these courses?
Because aroids aren’t like other plants. They have specific “personalities”. Our guides are built specifically for the tropical species you love, like Monstera, Philodendron, and Alocasia, ensuring you never have to deal with a “sad plant” again.
Meet Your Guide to the Jungle
We didn’t always have “green thumbs”. In fact, our first few aroids were more of a tragedy than a triumph. Spending years obsessing over yellow leaves, fighting root rot, and wondering why Alocasias were so dramatic.
Through a lot of trial, error, and a deep dive into tropical horticulture, we discovered that anyone can grow a lush home jungle-you just need the right “translation” for what your plants are trying to tell you.
We created these courses and guides to bridge the gap between scientific jargon and real-life plant care. Whether you’re trying to keep your first Pothos alive or you’re ready to propagate a rare Alocasia. We’re here to give you the confidence to grow without the guesswork.
